The X-Files is coming back. Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files to series, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel starring as two FBI agents, Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter reported Tuesday.
X-Files reboot: what Hulu ordered
The series comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television. Coogler, the Sinners filmmaker, wrote and directed the pilot and is an executive producer through his Proximity Media banner. Jennifer Yale is the showrunner, and original creator Chris Carter is also an executive producer, according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. Deadwyler and Patel are co-executive producers.
Deadline says the order caps a journey of more than three years. The project falls under Coogler’s five-year exclusive television deal with Disney, Hulu’s parent company. Carter first mentioned the idea on a 2023 podcast, saying Coogler was “going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast,” per Deadline.
The new agents
The logline, as printed by The Hollywood Reporter, describes “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” Deadwyler’s credits include The Bell Jar and The Chaperones, while Patel, an Emmy nominee, is known for Station Eleven and The Odyssey, Deadline notes.
“What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world,” Coogler said in a statement.
What came before
Carter’s original series starred Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. It premiered on Fox in 1993, ran nine seasons, and returned for two more in 2016 and 2018. The reports do not give a premiere date or episode count, and we will update when Hulu does.
