Journey Drummer Deen Castronovo Returns to Stage Two Nights After Tulsa Medical Scare

Journey drummer Deen Castronovo was back behind the kit Saturday night in San Antonio, two nights after a medical emergency cut short his performance in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

On Thursday, Castronovo had to be helped off stage at the BOK Center after the band played just two songs and was taken to a hospital. A Journey representative told Variety he “wasn’t feeling well two songs in.” The show paused for roughly 20 minutes before drum tech Steve Toomey finished the set. Guitarist Neal Schon told the crowd, “This concert is for Deen. I think he’s going to be fine.”

No cause has been given. Variety reported that Castronovo played the full 29-song set at the Frost Bank Center, singing lead on his usual songs including “Lights,” “Keep on Runnin'” and “Precious Time.” Schon wrote on Facebook that Castronovo “crushed” the show and on X that he was “back in rare form.”

Castronovo posted a message to fans before the concert thanking them for the support and apologizing to Tulsa for not finishing the show. The 62-year-old first joined Journey in 1998, was let go in 2015 and rejoined in 2021.

The band’s farewell tour runs through Nov. 28 in San Francisco.
