Prime Video has renewed Carrie for season 2, one day after Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation finished its first week as the No. 1 show on the service in more than 105 countries. There is no release date yet. What is confirmed: Flanagan returns as showrunner, Stephen King stays on as executive producer, and Summer H. Howell will be back as Carrie White, the role she won after nearly 1,500 actors read for it.
The renewal, announced October 22 by Prime Video, lands two weeks after all eight episodes of season 1 dropped on October 7. For viewers burned by the finale’s cliffhanger, it is the answer they were waiting for. It also settles the renewal question we have been tracking since October 11.
The cliffhanger that made season 2 necessary
Season 1 broke from King’s 1974 novel in its final hour. Carrie does not die as she does in the book. Instead, the finale leaves her alive in the passenger seat of her friend Emaline’s car, driving out of town toward an unknown destination, per Deadline’s renewal report. It is the first major screen version of this story to keep Carrie White alive past prom night, which means season 2 is writing on blank pages rather than adapting them.
Prime Video’s announcement teases “new revelations,” “major character arcs” and “plenty of shocking twists,” and confirms the story continues past the prom. Flanagan has been plain about the ambition from the start: “From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next.” King, rarely this hands-on with adaptations, added: “I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White. It’s bound to be thrilling.”
Who is coming back for Carrie season 2
Howell is set to return, and Deadline reports Thalia Dudek is likely back as Emaline, the driver in that final shot. Other survivors of the prom night massacre who could return: Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Josie Totah as Tina Blake and Kate Siegel as Adelaide. The season 1 ensemble also included Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Arthur Conti as Billy, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, plus recurring turns from Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley and Heather Graham. How the finale’s body count sorts that list into returnees and farewells is something Prime Video has not detailed yet.
The numbers behind the renewal
Prime Video does not release viewership figures, but the tracking firms tell the story. Carrie topped Nielsen’s weekly streaming ratings for October 5-11 with 1.26 billion minutes viewed, according to Deadline. Luminate put its first two days at 653,000 US views and its first full week at 3.6 million, ahead of every other Prime Video YA series this year. The pickup keeps a perfect streak alive: every Prime Video YA series to premiere in the past six months, including Elle, Off Campus, Every Year After and Sterling Point, has been renewed.
When could Carrie season 2 come out?
Prime Video has announced no date, no production start and no episode count. For a grounded frame of reference: Deadline first reported the series’ casting in April 2025, and season 1 premiered in October 2026, roughly 18 months later. If season 2 follows a similar path from here, late 2027 would be the earliest reasonable guess, and that is our estimate, not anything the studio has said. What is official is the creative shape: Deadline reported in September that Flanagan envisioned a three-season arc, which would make this renewal the middle chapter.
Fifty years of Carrie White
The renewal lands in an anniversary window. King’s debut novel was published in 1974 and has sold more than 350 million copies in over 35 languages. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film, the adaptation that made prom night a permanent piece of horror vocabulary, marks its 50th anniversary on November 3, 2026. Previous versions, including the 2002 TV film and the 2013 remake, all ended at or near the prom. Flanagan’s series is the first to treat the prom as a midpoint, which is exactly what makes season 2 interesting: there is no roadmap, and both the showrunner and King say they want it that way.
What this means for viewers
If you have not started the series, all eight episodes of season 1 are streaming exclusively on Prime Video, and the finale lands differently now that a continuation is guaranteed. If you finished it, the things to watch for next are a production start announcement and any word on whether Dudek, Agudong and Siegel are confirmed to return.
