The new Avengers: Doomsday preview aired Friday, October 23, during Game 1 of the World Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays. The footage showed Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic throwing a ceremonial first pitch at Ebbets Field, Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom arriving over the ballpark. Read our full breakdown of every reveal from the Game 1 footage. The pre-air watch guide below is kept for context.
What exactly is coming tonight
Major League Baseball confirmed the plan on October 22 with a teaser that reads, “Something’s coming. Tune in to World Series Game 1 for an exclusive preview of Avengers: Doomsday,” closing with the film’s release date: “In theaters everywhere December 18,” as ComicBook.com reported. Neither MLB nor Marvel has said whether the exclusive is a full trailer or a shorter first-look spot, and that distinction matters: anything labeled an “exclusive preview” could be thirty seconds or three minutes.
Laughing Place notes the teaser promises the exclusive look during Friday’s Brewers-Rays matchup, and fan predictions about what it contains, from first looks at Nightcrawler and Beast to more of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, are just that: predictions. Nothing about the footage itself has been officially described.
How to watch the Avengers: Doomsday preview
The preview only airs inside the Game 1 broadcast, so the way to see it live is the way to watch the game. Fox Sports lists the details: Friday, October 23 at 8:00 p.m. ET from American Family Field in Milwaukee, on Fox over the air and on cable, with streaming on FOX One, which is offering a three-day free trial. Cord-cutters with live-TV services that carry Fox, such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo or DirecTV Stream, can watch there too.
Timing needs realistic expectations. As ComicBook.com points out, Game 1 of a World Series opens with ceremony, and this one has more than most: Tampa Bay’s first World Series in six years, Milwaukee’s first in forty-four, and a matchup in which neither franchise has ever won the title. The smart guess is the Doomsday footage lands an hour or two into the broadcast, not at 8:01. Marvel typically posts trailers to its own channels minutes after they air, so anyone who misses it live will not be waiting long.
Why Marvel chose a baseball game
The strategy is not subtle, and it is smart. Avengers die-hards have been analyzing Doomsday frames for over a year, but Downey’s return as Doctor Doom, the Fox X-Men characters crossing over, and the film itself are unknowns to the casual audience Disney needs by December 18. A World Series broadcast delivers exactly that audience in one of the last mass-audience slots on American television. Expect the marketing drumbeat to get louder from here: a preview during Game 1 reads as the opening move of the full campaign, not a one-off.
