Why Kevin Atwater Left Chicago P.D.: LaRoyce Hawkins Gets a Hopeful Farewell

Spoiler warning: This story discusses the ending of Chicago P.D. Season 14, Episode 2, “Don’t Blink.”

LaRoyce Hawkins’ Kevin Atwater has left the Intelligence Unit, but Chicago P.D. gave its longtime officer a future rather than a funeral. The October 14 episode ended with Atwater choosing a police academy job in Atlanta and a new life with Tasha Fox and their baby son.

The departure closes Hawkins’ run as a series regular. It does not kill off Atwater, and a future guest appearance has not been announced.

Why Kevin Atwater leaves Chicago P.D.

Fatherhood changes the calculation for Atwater in “Don’t Blink.” He initially asks Hank Voight about a promotion, hoping to provide for his growing family. An investigation then leaves him shaken after a bullet strikes his protective vest.

According to NBC Insider’s episode report and interview with showrunner Gwen Sigan, Voight eventually offers hope of a promotion. By then, Atwater has realized that a higher rank is not what he wants most. He wants more time at home.

Voight recommends an opening teaching at the police academy in Atlanta. It lets Atwater keep doing police work while making room for Tasha and their son, Malcolm.

A farewell at Molly’s, not a fatal exit

TV Insider’s recap describes Atwater telling Tasha that he wants them to build something together. His colleagues then gather at Molly’s to celebrate him and say goodbye.

Jesse Lee Soffer, who played Jay Halstead, directed the episode. Sigan told NBC Insider that the writers wanted a positive departure that felt natural to Atwater, giving a character so often focused on others a chance to choose for himself.

That distinction matters for viewers searching whether Kevin is leaving Chicago P.D.: he is leaving the unit, and Hawkins is ending his regular run, but the character is alive. The story leaves room for a return without promising one.

Chicago P.D. airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, with episodes streaming the next day on Peacock, according to the network.
