Yes, it is really happening. Paramount has acquired the film rights to Red Rising, Pierce Brown’s bestselling sci-fi book series, and the studio is not easing in quietly: Francis Lawrence, the director behind four Hunger Games films, is attached to direct an adaptation of the first novel, according to Deadline and Variety. Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate) will write the script, and Brown himself is on board as an executive producer.
For the fans who have spent years asking “is Red Rising going to be a movie?”, Friday’s announcement is the answer. Here is everything confirmed so far, and what it all means.
What we know about the Red Rising movie
- Studio: Paramount, which picked up the rights to the series
- Director: Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, both Mockingjay films, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes)
- Writer: Justin Rhodes, who previously teamed with Lawrence on a never-produced Bioshock adaptation
- Producers: Lawrence and Cameron MacConomy for about:blank, alongside Francesco Goedhuis
- Executive producer: author Pierce Brown
- Scope: the first film adapts the original 2014 novel, leaving the door open for a series
- Release date: none yet; the project was only announced on Oct. 16, so any date you see floating around is speculation
The story Paramount just bought
Per the book’s official synopsis quoted by TheWrap, Red Rising follows Darrow, a Red, the lowest caste in a color-coded society of the future. He toils beneath the surface of Mars believing his work will make the planet livable for future generations. Then he learns the truth: humanity reached the surface long ago, and Reds are slaves to a decadent ruling class. Driven by lost love and a hunger for justice, Darrow infiltrates the Institute, the proving ground of the elite Gold caste, and vows to bring the system down from inside, even if he has to become one of them to do it.
The series grew from that 2014 debut into six published novels, continuing through Golden Son, Morning Star, Iron Gold, Dark Age and Light Bringer (per publisher Penguin Random House). A seventh and final book, Red God, is still in progress; Brown has confirmed it will not arrive this summer, per Winter Is Coming.
Who could play Darrow?
Nobody, yet. Friday’s news covers the director, writer and producers only; no cast has been announced. Fan casting has been a favorite pastime of the fandom for years, but until Rhodes’ script exists and a production date firms up, any name attached online is a wish list, not a report. Casting will be the next genuinely newsworthy milestone.
Why this pairing makes sense
Lawrence is arguably Hollywood’s most practiced hand at dystopian book adaptation. He steered the Hunger Games franchise through four films, and his fifth, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, opens later this year, as TheWrap notes. Red Rising’s mix of caste warfare, arena-style trials at the Institute and rebellion politics sits squarely in his wheelhouse. Rhodes, meanwhile, knows Lawrence’s process from their unmade Bioshock film, so this is a team with a shorthand, not a blind date.
The deal also fits a clear pattern at Paramount. TheWrap points out the studio has stacked its slate with big literary swings: Children of Blood and Bone (in theaters Jan. 15, 2027), Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow with Daisy Edgar-Jones (Nov. 12, 2027) and The Midnight Library with Florence Pugh attached. Red Rising gives the studio a potential sci-fi franchise spine to go with them.
How we got here
- 2014: Pierce Brown publishes Red Rising, a bestseller that launches the saga.
- 2015-2023: Five sequels follow, from Golden Son through Light Bringer, growing one of modern sci-fi’s loudest fandoms.
- Years of fan demand: adaptation hopes become a running conversation among readers.
- Oct. 16, 2026: Paramount announces the rights deal with Lawrence directing and Rhodes writing.
- Next: the script, then casting, then a production date. No release date has been set.
What this means for readers and fans
- New to the series? Start with the original Red Rising and read in order: Golden Son, Morning Star, Iron Gold, Dark Age, Light Bringer. You have time; the film is years out.
- Watching for news: the next real updates will be casting and a production start. Treat any “confirmed” release date before then with suspicion.
- Want a taste of Lawrence’s take on dystopia? Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters later this year and will be the clearest preview of the tone Red Rising is likely to get.
- Book readers: the final novel, Red God, is still being written, so the movie will not outrun the source anytime soon.
Hollywood has circled fan-favorite sci-fi before and stalled. This one has a studio, a proven director and the author’s blessing. For Howlers everywhere, that is as real as it has ever been.
