Ben Affleck Calls Justice League Reshoots a Career Low Point in New Interview

Ben Affleck calls the “Justice League” reshoots a “low point” in his career. In a new appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the actor reflected on the troubled 2017 film, the studio’s conflict with director Zack Snyder and a difficult period in his own life, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly.

Affleck, who played Bruce Wayne and Batman, described the experience as “so, so negative for lots of different reasons.” He pointed to personal difficulties, a tragedy during production and the clash between the studio and the filmmaker.

“I really saw how not to make a movie like that when the studio is at odds with the filmmaker,” he said, as quoted by THR. “You’re really making a mistake. That was what really doomed that.”

Speaking about Snyder’s departure and the reshoots, he added: “If you want the low point of my career, it was that.”

Why Snyder’s departure still matters to him

Snyder stepped away during post-production following his daughter’s death. Warner Bros. brought in Joss Whedon to oversee extensive reshoots, which changed the film’s tone, THR reports.

Affleck criticized how the situation was handled and said the loss should have outweighed the filmmaking dispute. His assessment is his own account, not a new studio statement. He also said some of what he heard about other cast members’ experiences was secondhand.

He welcomed the release of Snyder’s cut

In 2021, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” arrived on HBO Max after a fan campaign and further work to complete the film. Affleck told Horowitz he was “really glad and gratified” that Snyder got to release his version. “I was really happy for him,” he said, according to THR.

EW also reports that Affleck spoke briefly about drinking and his divorce during the earlier production. He distinguished those personal struggles from the problems with the movie: “Those things, while painful, were not what impacted that movie. They just happened to be happening at the same time.”

The new interview returns to a subject Affleck has discussed before. EW notes that in 2022 he described “Justice League” as a deeply unhappy experience and a turning point in what he wanted from his work.
