The new Josephine trailer puts Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan in a parent’s impossible position: trying to help a young daughter feel safe after she witnesses a violent crime.
Released October 14, the footage introduces a family drama from writer-director Beth de Araújo, with newcomer Mason Reeves in the title role. The film opens in select U.S. theaters November 20 before expanding nationwide December 4, according to IGN’s trailer listing and The A.V. Club.
What the Josephine trailer shows
Eight-year-old Josephine witnesses a crime in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The story follows what happens afterward, as she struggles to process it and her parents confront their own fears about protecting her.
The A.V. Club describes footage of Josephine testifying in court, alongside scenes of Tatum’s Damien and Chan’s Claire trying to support their daughter. The tension comes from the family’s response and the search for justice, rather than a simple promise that the adults can make everything right.
Who made Josephine?
Araújo wrote and directed the film after her debut feature, Soft & Quiet. IndieWire reports that the inciting incident is loosely based on something she experienced as a child. That does not make the entire film a literal account of her life.
The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year. The new trailer is a fresh look ahead of its theatrical release, not the movie’s first festival screening. Reeves stars alongside Tatum, Chan, Philip Ettinger, Syra McCarthy and Eleanore Pienta.
When does Josephine come out?
Sumerian Pictures’ release begins Friday, November 20, with the nationwide expansion set for Friday, December 4. The reports cited here do not announce a streaming date.
