Beyoncé returned to Houston with Blue Ivy and Rumi Carter for the opening of the Knowles-Rowland House, a project designed to give people leaving chronic homelessness a permanent place to live.
The singer joined Kelly Rowland and her mother, Tina Knowles, at the October 13 ribbon-cutting at St. John’s Downtown Church. KHOU’s Houston Business Journal report, published October 14, says the nearly $14 million development will provide 31 single-occupancy apartments, with residents expected to move in November 1.
Blue Ivy and Beyoncé’s Houston appearance had a purpose
Elle reported that Beyoncé invited her daughters onstage to help cut the ribbon. Blue Ivy, 14, and Rumi, 9, joined a celebration rooted in their family’s long connection to the church.
Beyoncé spoke about being baptized there and the foundation the church gave her. Tina Knowles recalled bringing Beyoncé, Solange and Rowland to serve meals after church when they were young.
What the Knowles-Rowland House will provide
The new building is more than an apartment address. According to Elle’s account of Bread of Life’s project information, residents will have access to case management, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, life-skills training and nutrition assistance through a partnership with Temenos Community Development Corporation.
KHOU reports that 16 of the apartments are designed for people with mobility and sensory needs. The development also includes common areas for residents.
The site has a history that predates the new housing. The original Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth opened in 1999 with financial support from the family and Rowland. It later suffered damage, including a 2021 fire. The opening marks a new use for that community space, rather than a new music announcement.
