‘Street Fighter’ Movie First Reactions Are Split: ‘Silly, Fun’ to ‘Falls Flat’

The first reactions to the new Street Fighter movie are in, and they are split. The film had its world premiere Monday night in Los Angeles, and early viewers on social media range from “a silly, fun, and fearless good time” to “falls flat,” GamesRadar+ and JoBlo report. The movie opens in theaters this weekend.

Street Fighter early reactions: what viewers are saying

Praise leans on the throwback tone. Brandon Davis called it “a 90s throwback with visual nostalgia but also in its humor,” per GamesRadar+. ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian wrote that it is “like Bloodsport on horse steroids.” JoBlo’s own premiere attendee called it “perfectly harmless, but perfectly fun,” while noting that “not all the humor lands.”

Others were cooler. Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky said the film “ultimately falls flat,” with jokes that “rarely land” and a feel of “half a movie,” according to both outlets. AxelTalksFilm said there is “a lot to like” in the performances and action, but called the premise “underbaked,” per GamesRadar+.

Who is in the Street Fighter cast

Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film follows Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), who are pulled back into combat when Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. The cast also includes David Dastmalchian, 50 Cent, Andrew Schulz, Eric Andre, Jason Momoa, and WWE stars Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, per GamesRadar+.

These are early social reactions from people who attended the premiere, not full reviews.
