Warning: major spoilers for the ending of Obsession (2026) below.
Five months after it turned a $750,000 budget into one of the biggest box office stories of the year, Obsession is finding a second life on streaming, and its ending is still the thing everyone argues about. Director Curry Barker’s feature debut has made more than $420 million worldwide, holds a 96 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and landed an A- CinemaScore, a rarity for horror. Here is exactly how it ends, why the wish goes so wrong, and what the director has said happens to Nikki after the credits roll.
What is Obsession about?
Bear (Michael Johnston) works at a music store alongside his longtime crush Nikki (Inde Navarrette), their friend Sarah (Megan Lawless) and his best friend Ian (Cooper Tomlinson). Planning to finally confess his feelings at their weekly trivia night, Bear stops at a spiritualist shop for a gift and impulsively buys a gag item called a One Wish Willow. In a moment of frustration he uses it himself, wishing that Nikki loved him “more than anyone in the world.”
The wish works, literally. Nikki shows up at his door unable to stay away from him, and Bear indulges the fantasy even as her behavior turns disturbing. The catch: the real Nikki is trapped, screaming inside her own mind, while the thing wearing her body loves Bear with a devotion that curdles into madness.
How does the One Wish Willow work?
The film lays out clear rules. Each person gets one wish, so Bear cannot simply buy a second willow and undo his own. The curse can only be broken three ways: if Bear dies, if Nikki dies, or if someone else uses a willow to reverse the wish. And the willow grants wishes literally, which is why “more than anyone in the world” produces an all-consuming, homicidal obsession rather than a girlfriend.
What happens at the end of Obsession?
The third act is a body count. After Nikki discovers Bear’s secret park meeting with Sarah, she beats Sarah to death with a brick in one of the year’s most talked-about jump scares. Bear buys another willow and begs Ian to wish the curse away, but Ian, not believing a word of it, glibly wishes for a billion dollars instead. Money rains through his roof. When Ian bursts into Bear’s house later to celebrate, Nikki shoots him point-blank.
Cornered, Bear locks himself in the bathroom and swallows a lethal dose of oxycodone from his medicine cabinet, the same medication that accidentally killed his cat in the film’s opening. He immediately regrets it and tries to make himself sick. In the living room, the possessed Nikki finds the unused willow Bear bought for her and makes her own wish: that Bear would love her as deeply as she loves him. The wish flips a switch. Bear stops fighting the pills, walks out beaming, kisses her, and dies in her arms.
The moment Bear dies, the spell breaks. The real Nikki snaps back into her own body, alone in a room with three corpses, two of them killed by her own hands. She picks up the gun meaning to end it, and the film leaves her there, screaming, covered in blood, alive to face all of it.
Does Nikki survive? The director has a canon answer
Nikki survives the film, but Barker has said her story does not end well. Speaking to CinemaBlend in June, he confirmed that in his head the real Nikki “probably goes to jail” for a long time, since she is the only living person in a house full of bodies her hands killed. Barker’s next movie, the horror comedy Anything But Ghosts, is set in the same universe and quietly confirms it: a news anchor in that film references a triple homicide committed by a woman.
What is the point of the ending?
Entertainment Weekly’s read is the sharpest: it is a “fittingly twisted ending” in which Nikki is left to bear the carnage set in motion by a selfish man who escaped all accountability. Bear wished for love instead of earning it, and everyone else paid the price. The counter-wish is the final gut punch. Even the entity the wish created loved him enough to doom him, and Bear, given one last out, chooses the fantasy over living.
Is there a post-credits scene in Obsession?
No. Obsession has no mid-credits or post-credits scene, so once Nikki’s scream cuts to black, you are free to go.
Will there be an Obsession 2?
Nothing is greenlit, but Barker is open to it. “I don’t think you’ll ever see a movie with these characters again, but it would be cool to expand this world with different characters,” he told Variety, floating an anthology approach. Fun trivia for diehards: Navarrette has said the ending was completely changed in reshoots after the film’s festival run, and that fans can spot the switch in her appearance. Obsession premiered at TIFF in 2025, played Fantastic Fest, and was released nationwide by Focus Features on May 15, 2026.
Where to watch Obsession
Obsession is streaming now on Peacock. It also features in our guide to the best horror movies of 2026, and if you are building a spooky-season queue, our Halloween movies to stream in 2026 list has you covered. Navarrette’s breakout year continues on October 31, when she hosts Saturday Night Live with musical guest Gracie Abrams, the same night the show returns from its break after Bowen Yang’s headline-making exit.
What this means for horror fans
A $750,000 movie outgrossing most studio tentpoles, a 26-year-old first-time director plucked from YouTube, and an ending people are still dissecting five months later: Obsession is the clearest proof since Talk to Me that original horror with a nasty, committed ending is the safest bet in movies right now. If Barker’s anthology sequel happens, expect every studio in town to start hunting spiritualist-shop curses of their own.
