Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler Debut as Tubbs and Crockett in “Miami Vice ’85” First Look

Universal has released the first look at Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett in “Miami Vice ’85,” and the film has started production, according to Variety, Deadline and Entertainment Weekly. The reboot is due in theaters on May 19, 2028.

Who is in the cast

Jordan plays Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Butler plays Detective James “Sonny” Crockett, the undercover Miami duo played in the original series by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson. The supporting cast includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby.

Entertainment Weekly says Leguizamo, who had a small part on the original show, will play the villain. “It was my first check,” he told the outlet about the 1980s role. “I was starving to death. I was able to eat.”

Who is making it

Joseph Kosinski, who directed “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” is directing from a script by Dan Gilroy. Variety says Dylan Clark and Kosinski are producing. According to the official description quoted by Variety and EW, the film is inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the series and will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami.”

The original NBC series ran from 1984 to 1989. Deadline notes that Michael Mann, who worked on the show, later turned it into a 2006 film with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

What the two stars do next

Jordan, who won best actor for “Sinners,” will next appear in “The Thomas Crown Affair,” which he also directed. Butler’s next film is A24’s “Enemies” with Jeremy Allen White, per Variety.
