The Girls are coming back. HBO has ordered a limited, five-episode revival of Lena Dunham’s Girls, with production set to begin in 2027, a decade after the Season 6 finale, Variety, Deadline and the Associated Press reported Tuesday.
Who is returning for the Girls revival
Dunham returns as Hannah, Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna. Andrew Rannells is also back as Elijah, per Variety and Deadline. Judd Apatow returns as an executive producer alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells are co-executive producers.
“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” Dunham said in a statement. “Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower.” HBO’s Amy Gravitt said the network is “thrilled to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning forty.”
Who is not in the announcement
Variety and Deadline both note that Adam Driver, who played Adam, and co-showrunner Jenni Konner were not named in HBO’s announcement. Both outlets point to Dunham’s 2026 memoir Famesick, in which she wrote about difficult experiences with each of them. Deadline says she described Driver as “verbally aggressive” during filming and that she has not spoken to Konner since 2018. Neither outlet reports a reason for their absence from the revival.
What we know about the story
The series ran on HBO from 2012 to 2017 and earned 19 Emmy nominations and two wins, per Variety. No premiere date or plot has been announced. Dunham told Variety last year that a revival would need a “really specific” story, such as millennial women becoming mothers or entering menopause.
