Greta Gerwig has opened the door to Narnia. Netflix released the first trailer Tuesday for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, Gerwig’s first film since Barbie, and it will reach theaters in February before streaming on Netflix, Variety, TheWrap and the Associated Press reported.
What the Narnia trailer shows
Variety says the trailer is set to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and opens with Daniel Craig as Andrew Ketterley, the magician of the title, telling two children that “sometimes one story is the beginning of all the others.” He gives them a magical ring that sends them to other worlds. Emma Mackey appears as Jadis, the future White Witch, and Meryl Streep voices Aslan, who is heard singing Narnia to life.
The cast also includes Carey Mulligan, Ciaran Hinds, Denise Gough, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Susan Wokoma and Samantha Spiro, with newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell as Digory and Polly, per TheWrap and Variety.
Narnia release date: theaters first, then Netflix
TheWrap reports the film starts in Imax-only screenings on Feb. 10, 2027, goes wide on Feb. 12, and arrives on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Variety also lists the Feb. 12 theatrical date and the April 2 streaming date. The AP calls it a dramatic reversal for Netflix, which has mostly kept theatrical runs limited until now.
Gerwig showed the trailer on an Imax screen in New York, where she spoke with Stephen Colbert, Variety reports. “I don’t remember a time I didn’t know the books,” she said. She also said she wrote to Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to get their blessing for the song.
