Who Is Paladin in VisionQuest? The Marvel Bounty Hunter Chasing Vision, Explained

The bounty hunter hunting Vision in “VisionQuest” is a Marvel comics deep cut, and fans are searching for answers. Paladin, played by Todd Stashwick, is the mercenary hired to capture Paul Bettany’s synthezoid, and he makes a violent entrance in the pilot, according to GamesRadar+. Spoilers for the first episodes follow.

Who is Paladin in VisionQuest?

In the pilot, a failed ambush on Vision leads to the death of his friend Fiona. Paladin then executes the sniper responsible, a move that shows his “no civilians” rule, per GamesRadar+ and SuperHeroHype. A mysterious Client has hired him to hunt and capture Vision. Both outlets say Ultron is secretly in contact with him, and that his handler is played by Dianne Morgan.

F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s research describes him as the “last in a centuries-long line of hunters” who is “trained in every art and every weapon” and bound by an unbreakable contract, according to GamesRadar+.

What does Paladin do to Vision and Tommy?

Paladin works out that Vision’s son, Tommy, is alive and gets to him first, holding him at Saint Mabyns, an asylum, GamesRadar+ reports. There he critically damages Vision with adamantium shotgun rounds before his gun jams. Vision sends him flying, and both outlets expect Paladin to return.

Who is Paladin in Marvel Comics?

The character first appeared in 1978’s “Daredevil” #150, written by Jim Shooter with art by Carmine Infantino, according to Nerdist. He is neither hero nor villain, but a gun for hire who has fought with and against heroes including Spider-Man and the Punisher. Nerdist notes he has also been part of Silver Sable’s Wild Pack, Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts and Heroes for Hire.

In the comics he is called Paul Denning, but Nerdist says that name is believed to be an alias and his true backstory has never been told. GamesRadar+ says the show’s biker-leather look keeps a nod to his comic costume in the goggles and helmet. SuperHeroHype adds that this is the character’s first live-action appearance after a cameo in a 2017 animated Spider-Man series.
