Dan Levy is speaking out against Shane Gillis’ “Saturday Night Live” monologue. The “Schitt’s Creek” star posted an Instagram video on Sunday criticizing a joke Gillis made about how women dress at the gym, according to Variety, Deadline and the Hollywood Reporter.
What Levy said
Levy called the joke misogynistic. “I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television,” he said in the video, per Deadline. “And to be perfectly honest, more men need to be standing up in opposition to it.”
He said the issue is not only a women’s issue. “This is an everybody issue,” he added, per NBC News. “The more that men objectify women in the media, the more that other men see them as objects and treat them as objects.” Levy hosted “SNL” himself in 2021, both Variety and Deadline note.
The monologue
Gillis hosted “SNL” on Saturday for the third time, NBC News reports. The opening set covered his weight and a trip to a public gym. Variety says the joke about women’s workout clothes drew groans from the studio audience, and NBC News says Gillis appeared to draw few laughs from the crowd.

NBC News also reports the bit drew heavy criticism online, with hundreds of posts on TikTok, Instagram, X and Threads. Comedian Sophia Benoit was among others who said the joke was not funny, according to NBC News.
A history with the show
Gillis was hired as an “SNL” cast member in 2019 and was fired days later after past racist jokes from his podcast resurfaced, NBC News notes. He later returned as host. He also stars in the Netflix series “Tires,” the Hollywood Reporter says.
Neither Gillis nor “SNL” had responded to Levy’s video in the reports we reviewed.
