Jessica Lange Says “American Horror Story” Season 13 Is Her Last, Even as Ryan Murphy Eyes More

Jessica Lange is not shy about her plans. At PaleyFest NY on Thursday, the two-time Oscar winner said “American Horror Story” season 13 is her last, even as the show’s cast and creator leave the door open for more.

Lange says this is the end for her

Lange joined Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman and co-executive producer Lou Eyrich for a panel in New York, moderated by The Hollywood Reporter’s Jackie Strause. Asked about the show’s future, Lange pointed to what she was told when she signed on. “Doesn’t it close the series? I thought that’s what was promised to us,” she said, according to Vulture. “We’re not going to keep bringing these old bitches back.”

Vulture reports the panel did not know what comes next for the franchise. Lourd and Eyrich both said they believe the Coven story is not finished yet.

Murphy has a different idea

The Hollywood Reporter says the Coven cast were led to believe season 13 could end the franchise. Creator Ryan Murphy now says he would like to keep making it “forever.” The outlet also reports Murphy said he would “never” do another all-star season as big as this one.

Her one condition for coming back

Lange had not been a series regular since season four, “Freak Show,” though she guest starred in season eight. She told The Hollywood Reporter she agreed to return only if she could play all four characters she created in the show’s first four seasons: Constance Langdon, Sister Jude, Fiona Goode and Elsa Mars. She also wanted to work again with the same group of actors. “It was a return to something that had been the beginning,” she said.

Lange called “Freak Show” her favorite season and Elsa her favorite role. The panel also marked the first PaleyFest Award, which Eyrich accepted on behalf of the series.
