Norte Fire 50% Contained: Crews to Stay for Days Guarding Against Rekindling

The Norte Fire in Orange County is 50% contained, CAL FIRE confirmed in its 10:20 a.m. PT update on Sunday, Oct. 18. The fire is holding at 570 acres, unchanged since Friday evening, and all evacuation orders for San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano remain lifted.

Firefighters are not leaving yet. Here is the latest.

The latest: halfway contained, crews staying for days

Some 583 personnel remain assigned to the fire, including 67 engines and 11 helicopters, per CAL FIRE’s latest update Sunday afternoon, strengthening containment lines and dousing hot spots. Crews plan to stay on the fire for several more days to guard against rekindling.

“We’re going to be here for a number of days,” OCFA Capt. Steve Concialdi told the Orange County Register. “We don’t want those embers to catch a palm tree or some vegetation in another area or next to homes.”

Containment is the portion of the fire’s perimeter beyond which it is not expected to spread. At 50%, roughly half of that line is secured.

Homes damaged: the count rises to seven

OCFA officials now say seven homes were damaged or destroyed, up from six in the initial assessments. Four of them are off Via La Mirada in San Juan Capistrano. Via La Mirada remains closed to vehicle traffic north of Esperanza so emergency crews can keep working, and the burn scar itself is closed until further notice as an active fire hazard area. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion earlier in the fight and is doing well.

What changed Sunday

Containment jumped from 25% Saturday evening to 50% Sunday morning after a calmer night of winds. Acreage has not grown since Friday evening, a sign the forward spread stopped more than two days ago. All evacuation orders were lifted at 6 p.m. Saturday, and residents have been allowed back home since then, subject to the Via La Mirada closure and the burn scar closure.

How we got here: the full timeline

  • Friday, 11:33 a.m. PT: The fire starts near Portico Del Norte in San Clemente and, driven by strong Santa Ana winds, races to 250 acres within an hour.
  • Friday evening: The fire reaches 570 acres. Roughly 6,000 homes and 16,000 residents fall under evacuation orders in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
  • Saturday morning: First containment figure arrives: 5%.
  • Saturday, 6 p.m. PT: All evacuation orders lifted as containment reaches 25%. Shelters close. The confirmed home damage count rises to six, later seven.
  • Sunday, 10:20 a.m. PT: CAL FIRE reports 50% containment, acreage unchanged at 570.

A FEMA Fire Management Assistance Grant remains in place to help cover suppression costs. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

What this means for residents

If you are back home: watch for flare-ups on hot, windy afternoons and keep defensible space clear of palm fronds and dry brush, exactly the ember traps Concialdi named. Do not enter the burn scar; it is closed and unstable, and crews will also be doing erosion-repair work in the coming days. Via La Mirada north of Esperanza stays closed to vehicles until OCFA clears it. The next meaningful milestone is 75% containment; we will update when CAL FIRE posts it. Why the rekindle watch matters

Santa Ana events in Orange County have a long history of second acts: embers can sit in palm crowns and woodpiles for days before wind wakes them. That is why nearly 600 personnel remain on a fire that has not grown in two days. The combination working in firefighters’ favor this week: dying winds, no new ignitions since Friday, and a burn area hemmed in by roads and irrigated neighborhoods. The risk left on the table is almost entirely inside the existing scar and the vegetation immediately around it, which is where the hand crews and water tenders will stay focused. If the forecast holds, the jump from 50% to full containment is a matter of days, not weeks.
